Frequently Asked Questions

How long do your soap, shampoo bars and conditioner bars last?

We take care to fully cure our bars to maximize their longevity. You can expect at least a month of daily use for most soaps. Shampoo bars are super concentrated and especially long lasting — a single bar will likely see an individual through more than a month of daily use. Our conditioner bars are also very concentrated but smaller than the shampoo bars — you can expect at least 3 weeks of daily use from our conditioner bars.

Be sure to keep bars dry between use and in a well-draining dish. Soggy soap dishes or exposure to shower spray will soften and quickly deplete your bar.

New to shampoo bars and conditioner bars?

We regularly hear that people notice their hair is shinier, softer and fuller after their first use of our shampoo bars and hair conditioner bars. Depending on your unique scalp and hair, as well as the type of hair care products you have previously used, you may experience an adjustment period. If you are new to shampoo bars and hair conditioner bars give it a week or so of regular use to see how your scalp and hair adjust. Bar shampoos sometimes requires more of a vigorous rinse than liquid shampoos. You might try one product at a time, using the shampoo bar for a week then introduce the conditioner bar.

Using our conditioner bars as a body moisturizer is an instant delight! They are super concentrated so just lightly coat your palm and smooth over wet skin.

What is cold process soap?

Cold process soap is the original soap (not a detergent!). Our ancestors likely happened upon cooking fats (acid) and hearth ashes (base) coming into contact with water, and conditions were just right and voilà! saponification occurred. Making cold process soap today, we are creating a chemical process between a base (sodium hydroxide) and an acid (natural plant-based oils and butters) — the saponified molecule (soap) is the outcome of that.

In cold process soap making the ingredients are reacted at body temperature, and heat is generated internally during the saponification process. This method allows for a lot of creativity and also produces a smooth, natural bar of soap.

What is superfatted soap?

“Superfatted” means that not all of the oils and butters turn to soap during the saponification process, so it's available to condition your skin.

Many people have sensitive skin that inflames easily or is troubled by eczema, dryness and other irritations. Natural superfatted soap can help by both nourishing the skin, and by replacing conventional or pseudo-natural soap or hand wash products that are composed of chemical or heavily refined ingredients that can act as irritants to the skin. Our cold process superfatted soap is gentle for all skin types.

Are your products organic?

We use many certified organic ingredients. Our labels and product web pages indicate which ingredients are certified organic.

Are your products palm-free?

Our soaps and shampoos are made without palm oil. Some of our products contain cetyl alcohol, a plant-derived emollient. Our cetyl alcohol is derived from RSPO Certified sustainable palm oil and the manufacturer is a member of the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil).
